Welcome first graders! Here we are proudly displaying our very first drawings in art class! We looked at a small creature and then drew it very large on a piece of paper with crayons. We hope you enjoy our work!

In class, we read aloud the story of When Pigasso Met Mootise by Nina Laden. This wacky, brightly illustrated story introduces two of the world's most prolific, exciting artists and addresses the difficulty of conflict resolution. Together we discussed how to argue with a friend. How do we treat people whose ideas are different than ours? How do we express our own ideas and feelings respectfully? How do we listen to understand the thoughts and feelings of others? Students began to work with a partner to create a drawing of a spring scene. The focus of this lesson is how to creatively collaborate with a partner. Once the artwork was completed students shared their work with the class receiving both compliments and questions from their peers. We also discussed in a group some of the challenges and joys of collaborating with another artist. Here are some photos of the artists at work: Can't wait to see the final fired piece? Come to Arts' Night on May 6th to see our amazing pinch pots! Here are our painted hearts- just for you. As part of our fundraiser for the P.T.O. these hearts will be available to order on all sorts of products and gifts for your friends and family very soon. Keep an eye out in your student's backpack for the order form for Square 1 Art!
Here's a preview of our drawings from observation. Some aren't finished yet, but we had lots of fun visiting with our furry friends in the art room! (It's a slide show. Click on the right-hand side of the images to see more amazing drawings.) Dear First Grade Parents,
For your child’s next art class, please have them bring to school their favorite stuffed animal. We will be drawing these animals in class. All stuffed animals must be able to easily fit into a backpack. Please do not bring in any overly large animals or distracting toys. This will be a great opportunity for students to draw from observation something that is meaningful to them. All animals will be brought back home the same day. Miss Smith's class, please bring your stuffed animal on Tuesday, December 10th. Mrs. Hayes' class, please bring your stuffed animal on Monday, December 16th. Mrs. Guanci's class, please bring your stuffed animal on Wednesday, December 18th. Thank you in advance for your support. I look forward to meeting all of your fluffy, furry friends! We transformed something as simple as a paper plate into something completely different! We designed patterns of colors filling up each side. Then we cut our circles into spirals making what was once two-dimensional into something three-dimensional!
