We made a colorful sunset sky blending chalk for our background. Ms. Fallon dropped a tiny bit of ink on our papers and we blew into a straw pushing the ink across the page to make these ink trees. We dabbed gold paint to represent the leaves falling from our branches during autumn.
We went on a leaf hunt and gathered up all different shapes and sizes of leaves from deciduous trees, just like we studied in Science! Next we placed our leaves underneath a paper, took out some wax crayons and using the texture of the veins when we rubbed the crayon over it- the leaves reappeared! It was like magic! Or was it science? No, it was art!
After reading My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss, students began to associate colors with emotions. Then they created their own artwork based on Mark Rothko’s paintings. Using chalk and pastels they created multiple color rectangles on a page to evoke a feeling. They reveled in the tactile interaction, proudly displaying dirty fingers. This photo was taken at the end of class with each student expressing the emotions they chose for their Rothko work on their faces.
In second grade, we're learning all about trees! We went on a leaf hunt and collected different shaped deciduous leaves. Then we used own collection to make leaf rubbings. We sketched all sorts of leaves and chose one to make into a clay leaf. Our leaves are drying. As soon as they are ready, they'll be fired in the kiln. Next we'll be glazing them.
We drew haunted houses with many details. From glowing full moons to shattered windows these houses these details make these houses super spooky! Check out some videos of second graders sharing their detailed work: These works of art are as unique as the artists who made them! On Back to School Night
we greeted parents in our second grade classrooms. Can you guess who we are? Just like the artist Henri Matisse- we used bold colored paper and scissors to create these stunning collages.
